Libraries are important places of encounter and exchange. Unfortunately, the libraries at Hochschule Mainz were hard to find, and a clear guidance system, as well as a consistent design language, were missing. For this reason, the library committee challenged us to develop a new signage system that is easily accessible, functional and recognizable.
Integrating the university’s existing corporate elements as well as incorporating the architectural conditions, we designed and implemented a clear guidance system that helps people to navigate quickly among all floors and working areas.

My project partner and I developed the guidance system for the two campuses »Holzstraße« and »Lucy-Hillebrand-Straße«. It addresses a wide range of potential users – students as well as professors and guests. Therefore, the whole design language had to be very clear, intuitive and functional. The characteristic pictograms are easy to understand and based on the round letter shapes of Hochschule Mainz’ corporate font »simple«.

As more and more research is done online these days, libraries are facing new challenges. They have to be digitally networked and need expansive media services. To improve the library’s online access, we additionally designed a new research catalogue.
Through conducting interviews with different library users, we gathered information about the users' needs and created our catalogue concept accordingly. The new catalogue enables students to visually browse different resources such as books, magazines, videos, or materials. If a specific resource is needed, a detailed search is possible as well. Additionally, the portal provides detailed information on the media positions in the library and offers the possibility to request and reserve books via a personal library account.
