Those who are grieving may struggle to articulate their feelings, while supporters may fear saying the wrong thing. Together, these challenges can create distance, leaving both sides feeling overwhelmed and unsure how to connect.Space for Grief creates a safe space to acknowledge loss and grief as natural parts of life, where shared emotional expression can offer support and relief. The immersive installation turns personal loss into a collective, embodied language, letting the body speak when words fall short. Participants release emotion by squeezing a crochet ball, sending a light pulse that connects with traces left by others. These pulses merge into a living network of shared experience, where each person becomes a glowing node within the collective.Drawing on cross-cultural practices and nature, the project explores how design can create space for vulnerability, care, and meaningful connection in modern communities. The installation captures pressure,duration, and squeezing rhythm, translating evolving emotions into light. Research&nbsp; Developed during my eight-week final thesis at Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, the project began with extensive fieldwork and in-depth research on grief, including over 20 interviews with both experts and people who had experienced loss. Through the interviews, three main insights emerged: Insight 1: Fear of saying the wrong thing leads to silence. Alongside the interviews, I also explored analogous research as well as a biomimicry approach that looked to nature as mentor — particularly mycelium, decay, and decomposition. Overall, research informed four guiding design principles for the prototyping and co-creation phase: Embodied Language, Safe Space, Community, and Nature. Prototyping and TestingThe main challenge during prototyping was to find an embodied language that felt natural and meaningful. This required more than 25 prototypes before arriving at an interaction that genuinely resonated with people and felt emotionally impactful rather than merely symbolic. The many prototyping iterations revealed that softer, more shapable objects worked best to express emotions, and that the most satisfying interaction was squeezing balloons filled with play-doh. After various co-creation sessions and an inspiring conversation with an old man at a wool shop, who started crocheting after his wife passed away and connected with the community in town through this activity, I tried crocheting myself but struggled significantly. I quickly realized I could not do it on my own, so I started new conversations and began building a crochet community. Crocheting became an important part of the process, bringing people together to collaboratively create the soft ball used in the installation. Every squeeze is captured and transformed into growing light visuals, turning pressure, rhythm, and movement into a simple visual expression of emotion and energy. They said it felt exactly like what they would have needed when their father passed away: a warm, supportive hand to hold and squeeze. A handcrafted crochet ball with an embedded pressure sensor records each user’s unique pressure and squeezing rhythm, translating it into responsive, growing light visuals. These light visuals are not only momentary, but are remembered within the installation: traces of pressure, rhythm, and emotional release accumulate over time, creating a living network of shared experience. Like a mycelium network beneath the forest floor, the released energies of individual participants move through a connective system, intertwining with the emotional traces left by others. Each person’s release becomes nourishment for a collective landscape of care, where vulnerability is held, echoed, and shared. Though technically minimal, the squeezing gesture is deeply meaningful: research shows that touch and hand pressure can calm the nervous system, support emotional regulation, and create a sense of comfort and agency. By turning emotion into light, the interaction allows users to express grief and compassion without words, reducing isolation and fostering connection. This project was developed during the Introduction to Programming course at CIID, a 5-day intensive in exploring Processing, Arduino and physical prototyping.Technofossils are “human-made artifacts that can become part of Earth’s far-future geology”, potentially offering people generations from now a glimpse into our daily lives. A cheap plastic trinket give-away, for instance, may take 500 years to decompose. To explore this idea, we curated an exhibition titled techno_fossils, imagining the absurd ways people hundreds of years from now might depict our society based on the objects we leave behind. We selected three items we use daily—AirPods, a car key, and a computer mouse—and created an experience that exudes futuristic kitsch. A visitor entering the space is greeted by thumping techno music and an AI-generated voice that speaks in sync with the beat, inviting them to pick up a fossil. The “techno fossils” rest on a platform made of black acrylic and aluminum-coated plywood. Hidden within the platform is an Arduino and three photoresistors, which trigger different responses depending on which object is lifted and exposed to ambient light. When a visitor picks up a fossil, the introductory text on the projector is replaced with a giant, spinning, 3D "deconstruction" of that object, generated using Processing code. This enlarged deconstruction visualizes how everyday objects, stripped of context, can become fragmented and misinterpreted artifacts. The glossy surfaces of the platform reflect the white pixels dancing across the projector screen. A booming voice, generated using Dennis Paul's Wellen library, narrates a description based on a hypothetical misinterpretation of that fossil. For example: “This is the Echo Wave Surge, circa 1960–2080 AD. The&nbsp;techno_fossils exhibition explored how physical spaces can become responsive environments, inviting visitors to actively shape the experience through their presence and interaction. The starting point of this project was the common phenomenon of overlooked, dying indoor plants, used as a lens to explore interspecies communication. The project investigates how a plant's naturally occurring signals can be made more perceptible to humans, encouraging people to engage with plants as living, active co-inhabitants rather than passive decorative objects. Using embedded sensors, bloomie continuously monitors soil moisture, light levels, and ambient temperature. These sensor readings are translated into three forms of communication: movement, light feedback, and conversational interaction.1. A stepper motor-driven moving base physically expresses the plant's state, standing upright when conditions are healthy and contracting when the plant is in distress. 2. An adaptive LED lighting system complements this visual feedback, glowing green to indicate healthy conditions and red to signal distress. 3. Beyond this embodied communication, bloomie also connects to a cloud network, integrating the plant into a shared roommate WhatsApp group chat where it communicates its needs, complaints, and changing conditions in real time. Overall, bloomie translates a plant's environmental conditions into embodied movement, adaptive lighting, and conversational messages, making its state easier for humans to perceive, understand, and respond to. Initial prototype as the proof of concept, simulating the state of the plant’s mood by using strings and a stepper motor Key learnings Throughout the development of bloomie, the team strengthened its rapid prototyping skills by taking the project from concept to a fully functional interactive prototype within five days. The team gained practical experience integrating Arduino with environmental sensors, networking and communication APIs, programming stepper motors, soldering electronic components, and fabricating an embodied interactive system. By giving the plant an embodied physical language and a voice within a shared roommate WhatsApp group, the team explored how interaction design can foster more attentive relationships between humans and the more-than-human world. Diversity, integration, and small, gradual solutions are key to creating resilient and productive environments. The approach emphasizes thoughtful design, where every element supports others, creating efficient and regenerative systems. At its core, permaculture aims to meet human needs while restoring and enriching the ecosystems we depend on.The permaculture design process involves observing the land, analyzing its features, identifying needs and goals, creating a site plan, implementing in phases, and adjusting based on feedback to build a sustainable, regenerative system. In this case, feedback refers to the real-world results and responses from the system you're working with, both natural and human, and it guides the adjustments made over time.Practicing permaculture taught me to observe living systems closely, better understand the relationships between people and the living world, and iterate based on real-world feedback. An approach that translates directly into interaction design. Just like in nature, good design responds to its environment and evolves over time. The feedback loop (observe, build, test, repeat) is key to building resilient design systems. Information that can quickly become overwhelming, especially for inexperienced hikers. In groups with different skill levels, this lack of clarity can lead to poor preparation, frustration, or even unsafe situations. Montara turns complex weather and trail data into clear visualizations and intuitive interactions, making essential information easy to understand so every group member can prepare and start their journey with confidence. &nbsp;&nbsp; 1. Wallet cardsThe experience is built around a digital wallet of hike cards, where each card represents a shared adventure. Instead of navigating through maps and lists, users can quickly browse upcoming hikes, participants, dates, and locations in one simple overview.
